A Message From the Principal

Labor Day signals that the end of summer is near. Pools are closing and our students have returned to school. Although the heat is currently extreme, the leaves will soon change color and fall to the ground. Recently, I stumbled upon a picture of a US Stamp commemorating Labor Day. It featured a man carrying a sledgehammer, a pick, a hoe, and an ax over his shoulder. His wife was in the foreground teaching a small child how to read. But what caught my attention on the stamp was the phrase "Labor Is Life."

The words stuck in my head for a few days and I reflected on how lucky I am to go to work each day knowing I’ll get hundreds of pinky waves from the younger students and high-fives from the older ones. It’s truly rewarding when a student looks you in the eyes, smiles and says, “Hi, Mr. Brockway!” We formally teach students reading, writing, and math; but, I know a child can’t succeed in life if they don’t have an understanding of the soft skills that allow them to interact politely with an adult. This “labor”. . . this career I have chosen is my life and I am privileged to live it each day.

This Labor Day weekend, I’ll be celebrating with gratitude the talented staff members who I work beside each day and the loving children that I am lucky enough to teach and coach along their journey.
