A Message From the Principal

Inside the Actors Studio is a television show that always catches my attention when channel surfing. James Lipton, host of the television show, interviews movie stars, writers and directors. Each interview concludes with the same 10 questions, the first being, “What is your favorite word?”

If asked, I would answer this question with the word "grace." I tried to pinpoint why this word is important to me. It is used in many of the songs by my favorite bands, The Dave Matthews Band and Mumford and Sons, but I knew there was more of a reason. I am sure my definition will continue to evolve; currently grace means empathizing, and always believing there is good in other people. Grace is forgiveness, even when you still may hurt.

I was browsing an elementary principal’s website and found the following parent newsletter article. I hope you enjoy.

“Grace means giving children what they need not what they deserve. It means accepting kids as they are and understanding their feelings and obstacles. It also means we provide the unconditional support our children need to make positive changes. Grace, however must be balanced with accountability or we risk enabling children to choose unacceptable behavior or failure to achieve reasonable goals. If we balance grace and accountability we let children know that we expect them to grow and learn.”
